It's not so much a question of whether it is possible to use it without freepats, it's a question of the provided default configuration. As the package is currently provided it will not even start. While removing the configuration entry will allow timidity to start, it appears that it does not have any instrument sounds or at least my attempts without it failed to produce any sound. > It's a thin line; the reason it is like it is now is to avoid that people > need > to install a 28M package (freepats) which they might not need, just to use > timidity. I can understand this concern, but current the provided installation will likely be broken for many (if not most) users due to the default configuration file and the lack of instruments. I simply installed freepats when I noticed it was the reason timidity was failing. However, I do think the package as provided should either work or notify the user of what needs to be done to make it work. -- Jamin W.
