severity 403206 minor thanks If some character is hidden, this is really a bug; I didn't thought about it earlier, but making the cursor invisible would be a very bad solution in text forms anyway. So, forget about this solution concerning this bug.
This may be an xterm bug after all. When I run elinks remotely from a Mac OS X xterm, though the cursor is visible in some way, it doesn't hide the character. But from an xterm under Debian, the character is completely hidden (note: the remote machine where elinks runs is the same).
