Sorry, I thought you just agreed that you could see the problem, which is that sometimes a b c.tex can refer to another file which itself refers to one of a b c.tex's auxiliary files by name. Or even, just that you can't make an alias in the same directory (because for example you don't have write access) and then compiling the file in a different directory doesn't work.
