Can you run mpd --no-daemon --stdout without alsa-base installed? Detection should work this way (if I remove my audio output section from mpd.conf and uninstall alsa-base): dolphy:~:0$ sudo mpd --no-daemon --stdout No "audio_output" defined in config file Attempt to detect audio output device Attempting to detect a alsa audio device Successfully detected a alsa audio device And while that is going I get: dolphy:~:0$ mpc outputs Output 1 (default detected output) is enabled But I can only test it with a device as my sound card is onboard. -- things change.
