Hi Frans,

I created a new install CD-ROM and succeeded with that, using the "echo 'using_dma:0' > /proc/ide/hdc/settings" command at the appropriate moment. Everything seems to be working fine now on this laptop. I needed to change the X config file and replace acpi with apm in lilo but otherwise 'out-of-the-box'. Post install
I added the apm and the cdrom trick to rc.local.

Here are two other comments:
- doesn't seem to be possible to change the country (for time setting) during the install process. I set it wrongly by mistake and there's no way to go back. At least you can go back (in expert mode) but
it never asks that question again. So now my clock is off by one timezone.
- to get the network running I needed ndiswrapper and the .deb packages don't seem to work. I kept getting FATAL not found errors and in the end I got the source from the project website. I don't
appear to be the only one.

Overall I'm very impressed with etch. Do you think anyone would be interested in the details of
the install being posted somewhere? If so, where?

Regards,
J

BTW, if you can find another distribution that uses the same or a more recent kernel than 2.6.18 and that _does_ work with your CD drive, we'd love to hear about it. We could then try to find out what they do differently.
