Could it be that your hardware just needs a more recent kernel? There has been fairly heavy development on the e1000 driver recently. Suggest you try with a 2.6.22, 2.6.23 or even 2.6.24 kernel. Installer image using 2.6.22 for Lenny is available at: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ Unofficial installer images using 2.6.21 and 2.6.23 for Etch are available at: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ The segfault in vbetool may be unrelated, but could possibly also be solved with a newer kernel.
