Last I heard, the default Python version is not configurable in Debian;
it is controlled by the 'python' wrapper package (from a source package
called 'python-defaults'). If you patch and rebuild 'python-defaults'
to change your default, you will also need to rebuild some of your
python module packages. In most cases, including subversion, you can
just rebuild the package with no source changes.

...But your question is why I haven't applied the Ubuntu patch. Have
you looked at it? It adds a _lot_ of complexity, and the main benefit
is to support an action (changing your default python version) that
isn't supported in Debian anyway. So that is why not.
