Hi Frank,
I do not understand why you tagged this bug ("modutils update
conflicts with module-init-tools") sid.
As you can easily verify, /usr/share/man/man5/modules.5.gz is the same
in both the sarge and the sid packages of modutils.
I don't know what happened, but it seems on Matthias' computer the
diversions from module-init-tools are somehow broken.

Please send the output of:
dpkg-divert --list module-init-tools
ls -la /usr/share/man/man5/modules.*
cu
