Since I did not hear back from you, I assume that the bug is valid for
git-core as well and I've done a quick check (I don't usually use bash
anymore) which came to the same result. I'm thus reassigning this bug now.

I don't think the patch will make it into git-core like this but I did not
remove the "patch" tag - this is up to Gerrit.
