Would you try the current version of crm114 in Debian (it's available in etch-backports too)? I can see there is some bugfix about syscall in the newer version. Just beware your .css files may or may not work (depending on your architecture) with the new version.
Anyway it can be a problem specific to your system. I'm not sure whether the problem is that the `syscall' call fails itself or whether the command called by syscall fails. In the latter case you might replace `mkdir' with a wrapper script that would log somewhere what's happening.
