Would it be possible for Blender to depend upon ttf-dejavu instead of ttf-bitstream-vera? The difference between the two isn't huge, but dejavu has a lot of fixes and is actively maintained. Unless I misunderstand fontconfig, dejavu is used by default, but vera will be used instead if it's found, giving users a slightly worse default for "sans" and "serif". Also, as can be seen in bug 461276, the ttf-bistream-vera maintainer aims to remove vera, replacing it with dejavu.
