I don't know when it started happening, but some time ago setting the "Layout Switching" in the "Layout Options" to either both Ctrl keys or both Alt keys allowed me to swith layouts easily. Now this doesn't work; I have to use something like CTRL+SHIFT to change the layout. Why would this be? My keyboad model is set to "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC", but when I configured xserver-xorg, I configured the keyboard layout to "us" with XKB rule "xorg" and keyboard model "pc105" (A few moths ago I had the model set to "pc104" and the keyboard model in Gnome Keyboard Preference to "Generic 104-key PC", but I don't see why this would make a difference.
