It should and I normally do it manually - but may be both things did
not happen. Sorry about that.
Strangely enough, I can still reproduce the bug on an up-to-date etch
laptop (kufelek). I cannot reproduce it on another up-to-date etch
laptop (beczulka). The main differences are:
- kufelek is an older machine, on which woody (or sarge, I don't
remember) was installed initially, then upgraded to sid, and then
etch when it was freezing
- beczulka is a newer machine, to which etch was installed a few months
ago
- hardware is different: kufelek is an hp/compaq nx6110, with a Intel
Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
beczulka is a MacBookPro (running i386 arch) with a ATI Technologies
Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]
My guess is that the upgrade from pre-Etch dists have left something
behind. I don't think that it is connected to the hardware.
Some answers to your questions:
- all the teddies (tested with xteddy_test) consistently either work or
not, depending on the machine
- neither dist-upgrade nor xteddy reinstall helps
This does not revial any helpful sign.
However, there is something potentially useful that I found: when on
beczulka, I do: "ssh -X kufelek xteddy", then it displays fine on
beczulka's screen.
Sure - it's displayed on a working X server of beczulka, My guess is
that kufelek has some strange problem. Hmmm, hard to verify.
If I do the opposite (i.e. ssh from kufelek to beczulka), it just
displays the outline on kufelek's screen.
This is what I expected.
This suggests that the problem is in the interaction with the X server
that runs on kufelek, and not with whatever xteddy is linked with.
Yes.
Here is some differences in the Xserver config that I was able to spot:
kufelek has (while beczulka doesn't):
* the following modules:
Load "dbe"
Load "record"
Load "type1"
Load "synaptics"
* the following option in the Device section
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
* the following extension:
Option "Composite" "enable"
beczulka has the following in ServerFlags:
Option "AIGLX" "off"
Do any of these sound like a possible cause? I could try changing
settings if any of these sound suspicious?
I admit that my knowledge about X server configuration tends to
zero - I was just happy when it worked. My first shot to verify
our common suspicion would be to use the exact configuration of
the working maschine and try it on the other one (you surely have
to replace the display driver but try to start with an as similar
as possible config.
Unfurtunately I have no better idea. Perhaps we have to consult
debian-devel list. It sounds a little bit overkill for this tiny
little game but there might be a chance that some larger problems
might be prevented.
Thanks for your patience
Andreas.
