Please use the "servernetbiosname" option when connecting to Win98 servers. This is currently being discussed upstream; I agree that it's a bug which should be fixed, though I'm not sure if/when this will happen.
This does not help on my machine, I have to run an 2.6.14 Kernel. Is there really no way to use smbfs filesystem anymore?
