For comparison: If the device is occupied, Rhythmbox will display and error icon, and the properties window will give more error info. Totem movie player will simply disable sound playback (but will play video without sound), and indicate it only by disabling the volume widget. Based only on this, I hoped any gstreamer-using application should be able to tell if the device was free or not.
