I see this issue reliably on etch systems.
In /var/log/daemon.log I see lines like:
automount[21298]: cache_ghost: entry in yp:auto-pks.direct not valid
map format, key /applic
This occurs for all items in the map. The entries all look like:
/applic -hard,intr,grpid servername:/export/applic
I can send straces of
strace -F -f -s5000 -o/root/start-autofs start-stop-daemon --start
--pidfile /var/run/autofs/_-.pid --exec /usr/sbin/automount --
--pid-file=/var/run/autofs/_-.pid --timeout=30 --verbose --debug /- yp
auto.direct
(by private email) if that would help.

TIMEOUT=300
DISABLE_DIRECT=0
grep automount /etc/nsswitch.conf
automount: files nis
# ls /etc/rc2.d
