I use a dark theme because it's easier on my eyes. Therefore, the text colour on the status bar is light and almost exactly as the same colour as the default background (and therefore unreadable). If I change to a theme with dark text then I can read the status bar clearly. The classic view, however, does not suffer from this problem and displays a status bar background consistent with the current GTK theme.
