Hello, I tried this directly after your bugreport and I was able to confirm this... but now (build from the svn) it looks like this:
energy:/tmp# ls -l insgesamt 100 drwx------ 4 root root 1024 20. Feb 08:10 1659576503 -rw-r--r-- 1 winnie winnie 59271 20. Feb 13:43 file.c drwx------ 2 winnie winnie 1024 20. Feb 13:43 tmp.KLBXx26546 -rw------- 1 winnie winnie 0 20. Feb 12:23 tmp.oVxjop8419 Please note that I was running mc as root and I was copying something from my own homedir (test.txt) into /tmp. mc was running in the background (switched with STRG-o to the console). The first time I leave the preserve attributes marked. The second time I unmarked it. So I can't reproduce this. (Please note that a chown wouldn't work if the file previously belong to root, since your user won't be allowed to chown it to root:root. So this feature basically only works if you are root (or another privilieged user) which is allowed to chown the file after copy (this is what mc is doing here if you check preserve attributes). Can you please try to reproduce this, and/or stating that you was working as a unprivileged user so that I'll can close/work further on this bug? Thanks in advance. Greetings Winnie -- .''`.
