The machine "C-BIOS MSX2+" is the default machine of openMSX (the machine
selected if you don't have a ~/.openMSX/share/settings.xml). So there is an
actual dependency: openMSX won't start for the first time unless C-BIOS is
installed.
Theoretically, you could work around this by manually writing a settings.xml
file, but since that format is not documented, it's not a realistic option.
In the future we should split the startup of openMSX into two steps: starting
the openMSX environment (with TCL scripting etc) and starting the emulated
MSX. If we make that split, it would be possible to start up openMSX and
change the default machine from C-BIOS to one you made yourself.
But even when we have reached that point, I'm not sure it's worth the effort
to make C-BIOS an optional install. For example the manual is not an optional
install either (it's in the same deb as openMSX) and it's about the same size
as C-BIOS. Is there any reason not to install C-BIOS other than that in the
future it will not be strictly necessary from a technical point of view?
