I'm confused about this. Shouldn't one only do this if one _needs_
the features of debhelper of higher versions? As far as I recall
backports guys are always complaining about "unnecessary" high compat
levels for debhelper.

I'm still a bit unsure about this. In Ubuntu, most users would be
installing the necessary libraries anyway (since those libraries
are needed for Gnome/KDE) but in Debian we have some "lean-mean"
types.

As I pointed out in an earlier mail, these features are enabled by
default in the newer "configure" from conky so you shouldn't need to
do this.

By the way, I would be happy to get feedback on whether the new
patches for reading battery info work with the newer kernels on
different machines.
