Upgrading to gammu 1.18.0 fixed the problem. Both wammu and gammu now correctly handle the empty sms. Thanks.
(FYI, wammu 0.25-2 still reports the gammu version as 1.16.0.) Lycos email has 300 Megabytes of free storage... Get it now at mail.lycos.co.uk
