Package: wireshark Version: 0.99.7-1 wireshark silently fails if it does not have privileges. It does print a message on the console: 08:56:42 Warn Unknown message from dumpcap, try to show it as a string: capset(): Operation not permitted
Since this situation is a fairly common, the GUI should display some sort of error message. Failing that, README.Debian could explain the situation a bit and point to http://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/CapturePrivileges A nice upstream fix would be if wireshark could be configured to run `sudo dumpcap' rather than just `dumpcap'.
