I'm not sure if shipping such a hook enabled by default is a good idea. For that, the problem seems to be not common enough.
I can't really say. I knew nothing about /sys/bus/platform/drivers/i8042 before, on what systems it exists, what are the side effects, etc.
In doubt, you're probably right not to enable that by default.
Maybe we can ship this hook as an example (/usr/share/doc/pm-utils/examples). Would that be sufficient for you?
This is indeed a possibility. Another would be to have the hook in place but not enabled by default, and a single line in some easy-to-find config file to uncomment/modify to enable it (but I realize that pm-utils has no files in /etc by default). Or any intermediate solution...
