FWIW I have switched the gdm Xsession script from the gdm supplied one to the x11-common supplied one.
This script is much simpler and works better for me as the .xsessionrc is run after session setup so I can run an xterm from the script and it gets the correct colors and fonts. However, if I wanted to do additional setup the .xprofile as used by the gdm Xsession might be better as the programs started from the Xsession scripts would see the changes I have done in .xprofile.
