Which GNOME package are you trying to build? I have had glipper installed on a variety of systems for some time and built many packages (as well as cross-building many packages) without problems. (e.g. anjuta which uses gnome build tools, as well as gnome-desktop and gnome-panel and my own upstream packages that also use GNOME libraries).
