Package: postgresql
Version: 7.4.7-6
Severity: normal

I just ran initdb and at the end it tells me

Success. The database server should be started automatically.
If not, you can start the database server using:

    /etc/init.d/postgresql start

initdb makes no attempt to start the server, so that statement is plain bogus.
