Something went wrong with debhelper or something like that, and the result was that /bin/su ended up having mode 755 instead of 4755. Oops! So suddenly, /bin/su didn't work. The suggestion in this bug report was to have a regression test within the package build to check that the permissions of /bin/su were correct before finishing the package build.
