I seem to be experiencing a similar issue. after upgrading in the last week, it seems that gnome-volume-manager stopped mounting my firewire harddisk automatically on the desktop. I believe that hal was the only relevant package that got upgraded. I found out that pmount-hal raises an error because it can't seem to deal with a empty volume.label. Now, since this disk actually has an ext3 filesystem with a volume label, I couldn't understand why it would show an empty string, so I tried running hald as root, and sure enough, the whole process worked again. Now, I'm not sure how it worked before, but I'm sure it worked up until last week.
