same problem on my notebook; but on my desktop it works; notebook and desktop should have the same packages at the same version (sid), but notebook is 386 and desktop is amd64
i saw that commenting line "log_daemon_msg "Starting GNOME Display Manager" "gdm"" on /etc/init.d/gdm, gdm starts also with the command "/etc/init.d/gdm start"
