the build process of virtualbox is called with ARCH=i386, which is wrong. So I am not sure which file to check, actually. How does it deduce the architecture? By looking into the kernel tree somehow? But you are right, it works with the Debian-provided linux-2.6.24, so the only question which remains is: got my git-tree-based building confused or is there indeed an issue with vanilla kernels.
