You may be right; I removed xbase-clients (removing the depdenencies
it pulled in), then aptitude purged ~c.
I then installed 9wm, which didn't need any new dependencies (i.e. all
its dependencies were already installed). I now get
$ ssh -X dhcp41 9wm
9wm: can't open display: Success
PS: Ah, perhaps I can't do ssh -X because that needs xauth on both
ends (xauth is provided by xbase-clients). I can't easily confirm
this at the moment because the host with xmonad is on the other side
of the internet, and both it and my X server are behind NATs, so I
can't use ssh-less xauth-less remote X (because I'd need root on the
routers responsible for denatting).

Probably the case, but I'll leave open until you split the bug (for
the aforementioned missing xmessage dependency).
