No, this sounds perfectly reasonable. I wouldn't want to venture a guess as to what would happen if someone had a Big5-based locale in LC_CTYPE but was using a UTF-8-based LC_COLLATE. Nothing good, I'm sure. > I don't think the present condition is cast in concrete. It is just a > best judgement of how long to make the usage message and how much > information to provide there. Er, well, the texinfo docs are licensed under the FDL with Cover Texts and Invariant Sections, right? That means Debian can's ship them in main, so it would probably behoove us to flag noteworthy issues in the manpage. > If you have suggestions for improvements to the wording I am sure they > would be seriously considered. How about: *** WARNING *** The locale specified by the environment affects sort order. Set LC_ALL=C to get the traditional sort order that uses native byte values. See locale(7) for more on localization settings. This adds a new final sentence and changes nothing else. This patch may not be acceptable for non-Linux GNU systems, as locale(7) is provided by the "manpages" package on Debian boxen, and is somewhat Linux-centric. -- G.
