If that's the case than I agree that it doesn't make much sense to have a 
desktop file.

All I know is from the bug report I linked to my email. I stumbled against 
this while merging cernlib for our gfortran transition and noticed this small 
delta that we were carrying since quite a while,
I can only guess that this was triggered by the presence of the menu file, 
which, as you say, is now removed.

Not that I'm aware either.
As far as I'm concerned, with your assessment that there is no reason that an 
user needs to be able to access this application through the desktop menu, we 
can close this as an invalid bug and I will remove the desktop file from our 
package.
