My understanding is that when build-depend'ing on a virtual package it is a good idea to first specify an alternative. This way of indicating what the package was built with and also provides a hint to tools which might otherwise be confused by the virtual package. Ryan Murray explains that the buildd software knows how to deal with this, I'm not sure if apt-get build-dep does (apt-get install doesn't at least). I will close this bug.
