I added 'printf ("Status: %d\n", status);'
before 'XRRQueryExtension(dpy, &event_base, &error_base);' and ran
xrandr --verbose -s 640x480 when the current resolution was 1400x1050
on a problematic x server and another that was started fresh. See
bad.txt and good.txt for the output. Status is 1 in bad.txt.

Nothing was printed into /var/log/Xorg.0.log during these runs.

I haven't yet done the upgrade to unstable X server.
