I'm not sure this is really ucf's fault, it may need support from debconf to do better. When ucf shows a conffile prompt on upgrade and the user is using the gtk/gnome frontend, if they select side-by-side diff what they are shown is almost unreadable. It appears as if the spacing between the two columns is collapsed to a single space, and as such you don't get this nice visual structure of an sdiff.
