Package: xsane Version: 0.995-2 Severity: important
A HP5300C scanner doesn't work with xsane, despite being listed as a completely supported scanner. In testing it segfaults, in stable it is not working correctly and in old-stable it worked almost correctly. This is a scanner of a friend of mine. It worked in old-stable, at least for color and line-art scans, gray scans worked but with black 'scratch' lines in the left part of the scan. I updated his installation to stable last weekend, and updated all packages to include all security releases, etc. What I tested (at my home PC, also a similar AMD Athlon, with three debian installations readily available): * Sarge with kernel 2.4.27-4-k7: scanimage -L: shows the correct scanner: device `avision:libusb:003:002' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5300C flatbed scanner. xsane: works OK for color and line art scans. * Etch with kernel 2.6.18-6-k7: scanimage -L: shows the same correct results. xsane: starts up correctly, gives a preview and color scans, changing to Grey consumes 35% CPU for a minute, and after that scan or previews are not possible anymore. It consumes again 35% CPU for minute and comes up with an Error Window saying: Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. Scanimage -L finds no scanners anymore. unpluging/pluging in doesn't solve this problem. It shows the scanner on libusb:003:003, but xsane reports .sane/xsane/Hewlet-Packard:ScanJet5300C.drc is empty and scans don't work. Deleting this file, and starting xsane again says: no devices. * Lenny with kernel 2.6.24-1-686 (no k7 version available anymore?): scanimage -L: shows the correct result as shown above. xsane: segfaults at startup. I'm stuck here, any help would be appreciated.
