Geert, I attempted to reproduce and document exactly what happened but couldn't; I was unable to get the installer to mount the CD as I had before.
Using expert26 and going through the "Detect and Mount CD-ROM" step I unchecked the ata_piix module from the "Modules to load" list. I never used any module parameters (this time or previously). The CD was then detected properly. The ata_piix module was loaded at a later stage when it also detected the module for my ethernet chip, I think it was during a "Detect Hardware" stage. I proceeded with the install on a spare partition, installing grub on the MBR. The new install rebooted properly the first time: the root partition was properly identified as /dev/sda4 in grub and in /etc/fstab. However, my CD-ROM is not available when I boot my new installation (it doesn't work on my first installation either). A quick google turned up this http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2005/04/msg00128.html My situation appears to be the same as this one. Let me know what else I can do.
