Thanks. The list of features you've outlined in the report looks pretty comprehensive; if I think of any more I'll add them to the list.

In the meantime, however, I may add the *FLAGS{,_APPEND} support to
debuild (and therefore the 10 extra variables to the set that debuild
preserves by default). Are there any other features which it would be
worth adding at the same time?

There have been several changes in dpkg-buildpackage in the last
months:

I leave it up to you to decide which one is worth adding.

I've got a couple of patches to debuild which I'm planning on committing this evening (once I've finished checking that they work) which should alleviate a lot of the problem, particularly for non-customised debuild setups.
