the default configuration of OPTIONS="-o quiet=1" and "-o quiet=2" in the update action leads to a command line of $APTCOMMAND -o quiet=1 update -o quiet=2 This may be hard to fix, but IIRC apt-get and aptitude are not specified about how to handle contradicting options passed on on the command line.
