In Opera, you can hit CTRL+U when the address bar has the focus and it will be cleared. In Safari, I believe there is an X button on the right of the address bar that clears and focuses it.
I would love to see either an X button on the address bar, and/or a shortcut key that will do the same thing. Unlike the Opera CTRL+U shortcut, it would be great if you could activate it anywhere, and the address bar would be cleared and focused.
