Hi Jeremy, I've got the same error. The jabber-irc package depends to python-xmpp which is incompatible to the jabber-irc program.
On Debian/Sarge jabber-irc depends on python2.3-xmpp as on Debian/Etch jabber-irc depends on python-xmpp (2.4). But the interface of python-xmpp has been incmpatible changed.
