Bingo! The amd64 box I am testing MayaVi2 on indeed has an Intel 965G integrated graphics chipset. I checked on an i386 box with nVidia chipset based video card and (sigh!) proprietary nvidia 3D drivers: I cannot reproduce the bug there.
