Hi Adam,
On a pre-sarge box, I got the following :
$ sudo apt-get install mpi-doc

Looking at the changelog for the package 1.2.5.3-5, I see:
mpich (1.2.5.3-5) unstable; urgency=low
* Declared a conflict between mpi-doc and lam4-dev (closes: #299198)
Sorry for the late follow up, but the conflict on lam4-dev has a pretty
high impact.
