 Hmmm why do Ubuntu kernels do such a stupid thing?  qemu ATAPI
 devices shoud be /dev/hda, and they should expect things break.

Indeed, there are some surprises from the 2.6.20 kernel http://beranger.org/index.php?article=2696&page=3k. Alan Cox wrote on Fri, 6 Jul 2007 "General. SATA and now PATA drives map onto the /dev/sd range as do SCSI, USB etc" on http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/791086.
