There's also 'update-alternatives --config editor'. Matter of fact, you should also send us the output of update-alternatives --display editor, since I have a very nasty feeling that this alternative on your system is borked (a fairly common problem with the editor alternative - I just checked and mine was set to an editor I don't even have installed on my system).
