Agreed, but in practice it seems a bit fragile :)

Right, but on the other hand using Sys::Hostname::Long and supplying
a FQDN seems cleaner in any case and doesn't hurt.
 
My suggestion is to make the suggested changes to
libmail-sendmail-perl (in fact I've just prepared a patch which kept
me from reading your mail in time :)).
