Wow, I don't know how I missed this email for so long, sorry about that. Yes, the problem is upstream changed the database format in an incompatible way on this upgrade, and there is a race condition between freshclam trying to convert the databases and clamd starting. This is exacerbated if you're on a slow network link or have a slow CPU. The only thing I could do is rm the old databases, but that will mess up people using dansguardian or any other software that loads the databases directly and is linked to an older version of libclamav.
