Please clarify what do you mean by configure. The GTK gui is in the -gnome package, right, but I think you could remove the gnome package once you configured the vpn (or set gconf keys by hand) and everithing should work. The intent was to split the gnome dependent part of the package from the real network-manager plugin. There is no kde front-end afaik, but the package is already in shape for that. maybe I should clarify in the package description that users should be interested in the -gnome variant of the package...
