Can you check if the following patch is enough to resolve your problems? http://git.debian.org/?p=dpkg/dpkg.git;a=commitdiff;h=d329b123b6d061df4b7a6dce938d6d9046b879ae I tend to think that it's not yet enough as it will still fail if the destination directory doesn't exist while the file-to-be-diverted does. But I might be mistaken and I'd rather make sure that the bug is really fixed before proceeding with the 1.14.20 upload.
